June 11th meeting notes

Hello, Sustainable Kirkland members:

Here are the highlights from the June 11th meeting at Sandy & Oliver's house (By the way, you shouldn't have missed it. The weather, company and food were great, and Sandy & Oliver were wonderful hosts! Thank you, Sandy & Oliver!)

Attendees: Sandy & Oliver, Claire & Torrey, Mary, Amanda, Jackie & Dave, Doug & Eileen
New people: Jennifer & Brett, Margaret, Chris

1) Kirkland Uncorked Festival - July 16, 17, 18th
Sandy still needs a few more volunteers.
Training session for volunteers Thursday, June 25th 6:30 - 8:30 at City Hall.
Everything won't be completely compostable this year (such as utensils), but it will be next year.

2) 7 Hills of Kirkland
Doug said there was no feedback from Waste Management.
There were some questions about how much contamination is okay without ruining the whole bin. Torrey said he has heard 4 - 5%.
Jackie suggested gloves for the volunteers next time.
Doug will order a Sustainable Kirkland banner.

3) Bank account
Doug checked into a bank account for the $500 + we made at the garage sale.
There was discussion about whether we want to set up the group as a non-profit or get a business license.
Jackie is going to check with SCALLOPS about whether they can cover our group.
Oliver is also going to talk with his father, who is a lawyer specializing in non-profit law.
Meanwhile, Mary is keeping the money in a cash box.

4) Northwest Earth Institute
Margaret and Chris are volunteers with NWEI. They discussed the community-based classes they offer on sustainable living. The classes feature shared leadership, and they are held once a week. They have done partnerships with PCC and also do this for LWSD and KTUB. People learn from each other. Their goal is to get this out to people who aren't already converts.

5) Trail connection
Oliver emailed Friends of Finn Hill, but has not heard back.
Oliver will email Larry about doing some work on this.
Could the LW Trail group give us some direction?
Eileen offered to contact someone at King County Parks and the manager of St. Edwards.

6) 350
Mary discussed this new movement, promoting an international day of action on global warming. October 24th has been designated as the day.
Looking for local actions.
We will discuss this further at the next meeting.

7) Sustainable September
We are still not sure if we will be helping out with this. To be continued.

8) Other actions
Doug will order 1,000 business cards for the group.
Need for a flyer also discussed.
Torrey is filtering the emails that come to the group. Everyone approved of this.

9) Next meeting at Doug & Eileen's house on July 9th.
