Last Thursday (Oct 14) we had a fairly candid discussion regarding the direction of SK. We have had difficulty both growing and retaining members. This is likely because we also have had difficultly maintaining momentum. Everyone is busy and pulled in different directions and committing time to yet another good cause tends to slip off the to-do list.
We have had many successes, including many good discussions, and helping with Kirkland Uncorked.

We aren't quitting, but looking for a new strategy. We are looking to collaborate with sustainable Redmond, we aren't sure how this will work out but Redmond is also interested in working together for a common goal.

I am also going to be stepping down in my role as President so we are looking for someone to take over. I think that a new person or new people in leadership will be an asset to SK. SK is more of a team effort rather than a "one man show" so the role of President isn't as difficult as it may sound.

Those of you who have been involved with SK and are interested in how we will continue and how we may partner with Sustainable Redmond are invited to their steering committee meeting which is:
Monday, October 25th, from 7-9 pm at the Redmond Town Center REI, upstairs meeting room (north of the restrooms), with a social half-hour at 6:30-7:00. All are welcome. (Steering committee meetings are typically on the 4th Monday of the month.) http://www.sustainableredmond.org/

Sustainable Kirkland is pleased to announce the launch of Juanita In Motion, a program making it easier for Juanita residents to drive less and walk, bicycle, bus, and carpool more. Sustainable Kirkland is a major partner in this program, as it is right in line with our mission. We're supporting the program in many ways, including publicizing the program and helping with events. The program is run by King County Metro, and the City of Kirkland is also a partner and a sponsor.

The goal of the program is to give Juanita residents the tools and information they need so they can change their travel behavior towards more sustainable, healthier habits. People who live or work in Juanita are invited to pledge to drive less. They can also order a customized healthy travel info packet that is delivered right to their door. Participants receive 8 King County Metro tickets and 2 Sound Transit tickets just for signing up.

Participants who keep their pledge to drive less over time are eligible for other prizes, including free transit fare and gift certificates at Juanita-area merchants. Business sponsors have donated some great prizes, including gift certificates for massage, sushi, coffee, Kirkland Parks passes, and more. LEED building presentation at Google's green Kirkland Campus

On Thursday, Sustainable Kirkland hosted an event at Google. Mike Nolan, Google's facility manager, gave a presentation on the LEED certification process, using Google's new building as a case study.

We had a good turnout, with many local developers, City of Kirkland staff, architects and engineers, and students and faculty from Northwest University. After the presentation, Mike led a tour of the building to point out some of the specific features.

Building a Potato Box!

Thought I'd share my design of a box I recently built to grow potatoes in this year. Let's start off with some pictures. The pics show the box with no sides, three sides installed, two sides installed, and the detail of the corner posts that allows the sideboards to be added and removed.

For those who aren't familiar with the concept of the potato box, I'll first provide a little background information.

Certain potato varieties can be 'fooled' into continually growing taller and forming new potatoes if you periodically add dirt to partially cover the growing plant.

In practice, this can be done by building a box with sides that can be built up over the course of the growing season, allowing the box to hold more dirt. From my reading on the web, a box like the one I built, which I believe is of fairly typical size, can grown and hold 100 pounds of potatoes. Another nice feature is that the box serves as a storage container too--just leave the spuds in the dirt until you want to eat some!

Now, to specifics on how I constructed my box.

Materials I used were as follows; I've put comments about cost and suitability where appropriate.

4" x 4" x 8' cedar boards, quantity 2. These are about $22 each. You can get cheaper cedar in the same size, maybe for $12-14, but the cheaper grade is meant for fence posts and such, and has a real rough finish. I wanted a smoother finish, and didn't want to sand down the rough 4x4s, so I paid up. Of course, 4 x 4 is a misnomer, that's the nominal size--actual dimensions are 3.5" x 3.5". The 4x4s are used for the corner posts.

5/4" x 4" x 10' cedar boards, quantity 3. (Actual dimensions 1" x 3.5" x 10') I think these were about $6-8 each. These boards are used to build the exterior frame of the box.

5/4" x 6" x 12' Trex composite boards, quantity 8 I believe. (Actual dimensions 1" x 5.5" x 12' I think) These are very expensive, $20+ each, and I wouldn't have used them except that I had a pile of this stuff left over from 3 raised garden beds I built and then later disassembled. 1x6 cedar would be a good alternative here--much cheaper and still weather-resistant.

2.5" screws, about half of a 1-pound box. I forget the exact name of this type of screw, but they're basically the exterior grade of coarse-thread drywall-type screws. About $8 for a box.

Tools used. Only power tools listed; you'll also need a tape measure, and a framing or carpenter's square is helpful for squaring things up.

Table saw. Used mainly for cutting slots into the 4x4 posts. If you choose to use slots like I did, you'll need a table saw, or maybe you could get away with using a router instead.

Drill/driver and bits. Oh yeah, you're going to need this. Used to drill pilot holes and drive screws. You do NOT want to drive all those screws by hand!

Miter saw. Handy for all the 'chop' cuts, cutting the posts and boards to length. You could use a chop saw, circular saw, or hand saw for this part of the job.

Basic Design

The box is roughly a cube about 3.5 feet on a side. It has 4 vertical members, the corner posts made from the 4x4s. These posts are tied together with externally-mounted horizontal pieces of 5/4x4 cedar at the tops and bottoms of the posts. (On what will be the 'front' of the box, a piece of Trex was used instead of cedar). The corner posts are slotted to accept pre-cut lengths of Trex board (about 30" long) to build up the left, right, and back side walls over the course of the growing season. On the front side, I'm going to screw in Trex boards. This will allow me to unscrew the front side board(s) near the bottom to raid the box of the lowest potatoes as I get hungry. The other designs I've seen on the web don't do this slot approach, they just figure you'll screw on/unscrew the side boards as needed. I think that my approach will make the operation of the box simpler, but it added several hours to the construction of the box.

The site is designed to target new or hesitant gardeners who would like to do the right thing with their landscaping but don't know where to start or are overwhelmed by the depth of information offered on most sites. The site gives a short explanation of the benefits of growing natives and edibles and recommends just a few varieties of plants to start with and which tend to be easier to grow in or around Seattle for people who aren't ready yet to delve into proper soil preparation or attentive maintenance etc.
This website currently has no source of income and has been created entirely by volunteer work for the benefit of the future of the people and wildlife living in the Puget Sound area.

The Coalition of Organic Landscape Professionals (C.O.O.L) and Seattle Tilth are co-hosting the screening of the documentary as part of an afternoon event at Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland. The event will also feature keynote speaker Paul Tukey, the nationally-known gardening host who is the executive producer and narrator of the film. "

1. Polystyrene Letter
Claire and Eileen have drafted a letter and sent it to a few other people in the group for critique. Claire would like input by TUESDAY so she can send to the city.

2. Google Tour - It's a go for Thursday March 18

Someone needs to draft a letter from SK inviting them to the event.
Torrey needs to run the letter through Google for approval.
We need to draft a list of invitees by the FIRST WEEK of FEBRUARY so that someone has time to consolidate the names, print letter, prior to our next meeting.
We would like to have a mix of land owners and developers with an emphasis on those that aren't already doing work in this area.
Doug needs to make letterhead from the SK logo prior to our next meeting. (Do we also need more business cards?)
SK will cover food and drinks.
Torrey is still sorting out some of the logistics.

3. Group Meeting Structure

Meetings are switching from being all business to alternating between business and discussion.
Each SK member is encouraged to think about a topic on which they have knowledge or would like to discuss.
Doug and Eileen have generously offered to host our meetings! Thanks for your hospitality.

Meeting at the Kirkland Firehouse, we had a good turnout with 13 people for the dinner and discussion.

A reminder to all members and potential members: please join the mailing list! You're missing out on discussion, news, and planning otherwise.

Styrofoam or Bag ban
The main discussion topic of the evening was the possibility of pursuing either a Styrofoam-food-box ban or plastic bag ban, or some variation of that, such as a bag tax. Conclusions so far:

We need to research and understand the options better. We need data on environmental impacts of bags & styrofoam, legislative approaches, and what Kirkland businesses are already doing.
We need to get a better understanding of what Seattle is doing regarding a Styrofoam ban.
We will pursue at most one of the possibilities.
A Styrofoam ban might be both easier to achieve, less disruptive to business, and more environmentally beneficial.
After we've done some research, the plan is to write a letter to the new City council early in the next year.

Further work on this will take place on the mailing list.

Meeting Location
The Kirkland Fire hall is working well for us, but everyone seemed to agree that a restaurant with a back room might be a good alternative, at least some of the time. We will see what we can do for December, but otherwise plan to continue at the fire hall.

Future Project Possibilities and Updates
There are lots of interesting possibilities for us to get involved in:

Sustainable Seattle is running a "Dream a Sound Future" competition. That will be mid to late 2010.
Hopelink is working towards a Time Banking project on the Eastside. Also probably mid to late 2010 before launch, maybe we could help sooner than that.
Pea Patch project in Kirkland near the Teen Center / Community Center. Looking at facilitating hands-on involvement from multiple generations, teens & seniors.
In Motion project from King County Metro - Kirkland might start summer or fall of 2010.
Bike Sharing project may be coming to the Eastside, more than just Kirkland as well... RFP is (or is going?) out to vendors.
The BNR Rail Route is finally making some progress again (Multi use trail). This is a huge project, but we can look for opportunities to provide input. At the least, if and when the Environmental Impact Statement is prepared, we can comment. (The Kirkland Reporter is supposed to have a story on this but I could not find it on their website.)
Possibility of joint events with other Eastside Sustainable Communities. Maybe a Sustainable Eastside Festival could be organized?

Google Campus Tour

As discussed before, we're looking at organizing and co-sponsoring a tour of Google's new LEED (certification in progress) campus. Google is interested in doing this. To have a real positive impact on Kirkland, we need to plan to promote this beyond the existing sustainable community. We want to reach conventional builders and other interested-but-not-yet-committed businesses. We can aim for a date in spring 2010, but we'll start reaching out to the business community immediately, building contacts etc.

Eastside Greendrinks is meeting in Kirkland, at Architechtronics on November 19th. More details at their site.
Al Gore is coming to Seattle on his book tour, speaking at Seattle Town Hall on November 17th.
The Sustainable Futures Book Club is doing a presentation of the movie "No Impact Man", as well as discussing the book. Contact them for more info.

Next week we are meeting at Fire Station 22 on Thursday, September 10. We'll have a normal 6:30 PM start for food and casual conversation with business starting around 7:00 PM.

At this location, we can bring food and drink but no alcohol. We're not sure about the details of the facility so it's best to simply bring simple food items that don't need to be heated up, or anything messy.

Larry and Doug (and Torrey) did some leg work a few Saturday's ago
they concluded that there was a good reason why no trail had been built in the location we were considering
it is extremely steep with a stream running down the bottom of a ravine
after much discussion we decided that building a trail was outside of the scope of this group
However, improving signage along existing trails we will look into further

2. What next?

Greening other festivals - we will continue to do this where needed, perhaps Uncorked next year but we would like to expand beyond compost
Community garden - something similar to what Seattle tilth has. Can we have one in Kirkland, maybe behind Heritage Hall or at Peter Kirk Park, both are central and accessible by the community, especially PKP.
ACTION: Dave inquire regarding the City's interest in a community garden
City projects - There may be projects the City would like to do but have put on the back burner due to cutbacks - we should ask them for ideas
ACTION: Claire contact someone at the city
Biking - we all are keen on biking, "green business" bike tour, support ongoing efforts such as trail along rail-line through Kirkland etc.

Many have heard of bike sharing from stories about Paris’ Velib or Washington, DC’s SmartBike, but wondered how it actually works. In Paris, Montreal, Washington, DC, and other regions around the world, people are using bike share systems as a new mobility option.

To learn more about bike share systems, King County is hosting three bike share providers in Seattle on August 11^th and in Redmond on August 12^th. These vendors will show you their newest bike share systems, including bikes and stations, and allow you to experience one of the hottest trends in mobility.

Kirkland Uncorked is this weekend

Join volunteers from Sustainable Kirkland this weekend at the Kirkland Uncorked festival in Marina Park: a festival of art, food, wine, music, and lifestyle.

The festival promenade is free and open to the public. A fee is required for entry to the tasting area, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Hope Heart Institute.

To support sustainability efforts at the festival, Sustainable Kirkland volunteers will be staffing the composting stations inside the tasting area. Stop by to learn more about our group!

July 9th meeting notes

Here are some highlights from our July 9th meeting. It was a great evening at Doug and Eileen's!

1) Trails Connection Proposal:

TJ Davis of the King County Parks Department talked about the Community Partnership Grants Program. These grants are given to community organizations and range from a few hundred to $250,000. He assured us that his office will work with us in planning a scope of work, getting permissions and easements, and breaking the project into pieces. He brought a GIS layered map of the 3 parks (St. Edwards, Big Finn Hill, and O.O. Denny). According to the map, it looks like most of the trail building will happen in the middle "skinny" section of Big Finn Hill.

Next steps: Getting a more detailed map with a topographic-layer incorporated (Eileen). Scouting out the trails in the field. Assessing what needs to be done and possibly contacting a trails organization to see exactly how to build a trail. Trail reconnaissance will be on Saturday, July 25 at 9 am. Location TBA.

2) Kirkland Uncorked
Sandy recapped the composting guidelines. At the festival, there will be 4 waste stations, with 3 bins each. There will be signs with velcroed items on them to use as a composting guideline. Wine glasses can't be recycled, but can be reused and can be brought to the entrance if attendants don't want them. When volunteering, check in first with the Volunteer station, and then at the City of Kirkland booth for supplies.

3) Blog
Jackie asked the group to send any interesting blog material to her. This might be anything related to sustainability in the Kirkland area. Also, we need more pictures taken of our group. Please bring cameras to events.

4) Bike Share
Eileen announced that there will be a King County Bike Share demonstration on August 11 at the Discovery Center in Seattle and on August 12 at the Redmond Town Center.

5) Other ideas
Torrey suggested a discussion on Resilient Communities.

6) Next Meeting
The next meeting will be on August 13 at Juanita Beach Park.

Doug checked into a bank account for the $500 + we made at the garage sale.
There was discussion about whether we want to set up the group as a non-profit or get a business license.

Oliver is also going to talk with his father, who is a lawyer specializing in non-profit law.
Meanwhile, Mary is keeping the money in a cash box.

4) Northwest Earth Institute
Margaret and Chris are volunteers with NWEI. They discussed the community-based classes they offer on sustainable living. The classes feature shared leadership, and they are held once a week. They have done partnerships with PCC and also do this for LWSD and KTUB. People learn from each other. Their goal is to get this out to people who aren't already converts.

5) Trail connection
Oliver emailed Friends of Finn Hill, but has not heard back.
Oliver will email Larry about doing some work on this.
Could the LW Trail group give us some direction?
Eileen offered to contact someone at King County Parks and the manager of St. Edwards.

Mary discussed this new movement, promoting an international day of action on global warming. October 24th has been designated as the day.
Looking for local actions.

Volunteers needed for Kirkland Uncorked, July 17-19

Sustainable Kirkland is pleased to partner with Kirkland Uncorked to "green" this year's festival.

Kirkland Uncorked: A Festival of Art, Style & Taste, will be held July 17 - 19 on the downtown Kirkland waterfront. The annual event features, wine, food, art, and jazz music. Highlights include art shows, grilling competitions and demonstrations, tasting with 13 Washington wineries, main stage jazz performances, tours of The Lady Washington (the Official Ship of the State of Washington), a dog model search, and the Kirkland Classic Car Show. A portion of ticket sales and proceeds from a selection of artworks donated by the artists will benefit Hope Heart Institute.

Sustainable Kirkland volunteers will staff recycling and composting stations to educate visitors about recycling in the City of Kirkland. Volunteers are needed, and everyone is welcome! To sign up, please e-mail info@sustainablekirkland.org. Festival volunteers will receive a free pass to attend the festival.

Join Sustainable Kirkland for a presentation on Green Remodeling. Jon Alexander will be speaking at the Wilde Rover on January 20, 2009 at 7:00pm.

Jon Alexander, President of Sunshine Construction, has specialized in green building since 1991. His homes have won awards in the Seattle Built Green Design competition and the Innovations in Conservation Award. Garage sale this weekend

Garage Sale - Saturday May 16th

Instead of running our own Garage Sale in April, we decided to join up with the City of Kirkland community sale at Juanita Beach on Saturday May 16th.

We're sharing two tables, as a group, and in addition to raising some money for Sustainable Kirkland we hope to promote the group.
